I’m in Kansas for the next two weeks, teaching in the Collaborative Language Documentation workshop. We’re off to a great start this morning, with Gary Mitchell from the Potawatomi community. He said some very sensible things about language and history. My favourite quote was “You can’t blame history for everything, though you can get pretty pissed off when you read about some of the things that happened.”
Now we’re in the first plenary, with Alice Taff and Marsh Hotch from the University of Alaska. They are doing a great job in weaving together all the threads of language documentation and how the different workshop sessions fit together.
I’ll be teaching courses on dictionaries (“lexicography”) and on strategies for introducing languages to communities. Any blog readers who are in town, do come and say hello.
