A major cyclone (= hurricane) passed very close to Milingimbi and Maningrida earlier this week. Here's a link to the BOM's tracking map. It was the biggest cyclone ever to hit the Northern Territory, with wind speeds of 350 km per hour. Current word seems to be that everyone's ok. There was quite a bit of damage at Maningrida but Milingimbi seems to have only had minor damage. Phones are out (one report said 1,000 phone lines, which really surprised me – I didn't think there were that many lines in Eastern Arnhem Land!) but my "source" at Gapuwiyak had sporadic email and power. So, big relief all round.
