Many thanks to everyone for their condolences. It was perhaps ironic that last week as I got the news I was revising the section in my field methods book on the difficulties of working in endangered language communities, including what it’s like to be constantly making friends and working very intensively with people who then go and die on you when you’re too far away to be part of the farewell.
